Sanitizing

Some truths that are not always being told

There is a lot of misleading information out there about sanitizing theatre style body worn microphones.

  • First - if the microphone is not in front of an actor's mouth the chances of any significant bacteria accumulating on the microphone is very low (GOOD NEWS)
  • That being said it is wise to follow the following protocols (not just because of COVID 19)
  • dedicate a microphone to each actor - it is their's for the full show run
  • clean the microphone after each performance
  • sanitize the microphone after each performance
  • if using foam pop-filters/windscreens - replace or wash after each performance

Our solution for cleaning your theatre microphonesYou do not need some expensive "microphone specific cleaners" at $10 to 20 per 4oz bottle - shame on you Musicians Friend/Guitar Center and B&H for implying otherwise  Just use Isopropyl Alcohol diluted with distilled water to about 80% - so 4 fl oz of Isopropyl Alcohol 99.9% to 1 fl oz of distilled water in a small spray bottle works great  Sanitize the easy way

  • first clean the microphone of all make-up and tape residue and let dry,
  • spray the watered down 80% Isopropyl Alcohol onto the microphone - don't spray too much into the opening at the end of the mic capsule
  • leave to dry - this will allow the mixture to kill 99.9% of any bacteria (including COVID 19 or flu) - leave no residue and will not damage the mic even if some gets onto the diaphragm it self.
  • that's it.
